Puppet Core Platform Support Lifecycle

This Puppet Core® lifecycle policy helps you make informed decisions about when to update your Core version. Support and maintenance provided under this policy are subject to Puppet’s Support Terms, which may be updated by Puppet from time to time. 

Puppet Core versions are supported based on the Puppet Enterprise releases in which they are included. A given Puppet Core version will be supported for as long as at least one actively supported PE release is built on it. When the final PE release that uses a given Puppet Core version reaches End of Maintenance and Support (EOMS), that Puppet Core version also reaches EOMS.

Dependency on Puppet Enterprise 

Puppet Core does not define its own independent release lifecycle. Instead, its support dates are derived from the Puppet Enterprise releases that include it: 

• A Puppet Core version is supported so long as at least one currently-supported PE release is built upon it. 
• When a PE release incorporating a given Puppet Core version reaches EOMS, that Puppet Core version may simultaneously reach EOL, or it may be used to in a newer PE version. 

PE Release Model (from August 2026) 

Puppet Enterprise's release model — including the Latest / Latest-1 support policy that took effect with PE 2026.0 — is documented in full on the Puppet Enterprise Support Lifecycle page (puppet.com/products/puppet-enterprise/support-lifecycle). Puppet Core's supported versions and lifecycle dates are derived from that PE release model, as described above under Dependency on Puppet Enterprise.

Overview 

Puppet Core 8 is the platform used by PE 2023.x and PE 2025.y (currently Latest, transitioning to Latest-1 upon the release of PE 2026.0 in August 2026). Puppet Core 8 will remain supported until PE 2025.y reaches EOMS, which is projected to occur in August 2027. 

Key Dates 

• GA: April 2023  
• PE 2023.x (final legacy LTS release, PE 2023.8.z): reaches EOMS on February 27, 2027 
• PE 2025.y: currently Latest; transitions to Latest-1 in August 2026, upon release of PE 2026.0 
• PE 2025.y: reaches EOMS in August 2027 (projected), upon release of PE 2027.0 
• Puppet 8.x EOMS: August 2027 (projected), set by PE 2025.y — the later of the two PE EOMS dates above 

Overview 

Puppet Core 9 will be the platform for PE 2026.0, expected to release in August 2026. Under the Latest / Latest-1 model, PE 2026.y will be the Latest release for approximately 12 months until PE 2027.0 ships, then will transition to Latest-1 for a further 12 months before reaching EOMS in approximately August 2028. 

Key Dates 

• GA: August 2026 (projected — alongside PE 2026.0) 
• Puppet Core 9.x EOMS: August 2028 (projected) 

Note: Puppet Core 9 dates are projections based on the planned annual cadence of PE major releases. Dates will be confirmed upon the release of PE 2026.0. 

Puppet Core components— including Puppet Agent, Puppet Server, PuppetDB, Facter, and related tooling — follow the same maintenance and end-of-life timelines as the Puppet Enterprise release track they are included in.

Customers running Puppet Core versions that have reached EOMS are strongly encouraged to upgrade to a currently supported version. Unsupported versions are no longer eligible for: 

• Security patches 
• Defect fixes 
• New features or enhancements 
• Technical support from Puppet/Perforce 

To remain on a fully supported Puppet Core version: 

• Run the Latest Puppet Core version to receive new features, security updates, and defect fixes. 
• Customers who cannot immediately move to Latest should ensure they are on Latest-1, which remains eligible for security updates and defect fixes.
