What Is IT Process Automation?

IT process automation (ITPA) enables the creation of simple and scalable workflows to get specific tasks done across multiple systems.

It is workflow automation that is oriented toward tactical objectives (such as “list installed software” or “execute this script”) as opposed to strategic objectives (“keep systems updated” or “enforce security policies”).

IT Process Automation Examples

As organizations scale, adapt, and move into hybrid cloud environments, the need for efficient and simple automation and task orchestration becomes more apparent and more essential. A good task orchestration tool saves time for SREs and administrators without being a burden to learn and maintain.

Here are a few examples of how IT process automation is solving problems today.

  • Manage resources on any major public cloud; create, modify, destroy, and report, all from one central location
  • Extend popular cloud provisioning tools with enhanced command line capabilities
  • Deploy and manage cloud-based containers quickly and easily
  • Audit router and switch configurations to ensure compliance with standards
  • Verify or change quality of service settings on routers and layer 3 switches
  • Add, remove, modify, and verify firewall rules
  • Reboot multiple systems simultaneously or in sequence
  • Deploy operating system patches to a mixture of Windows and multiple Linux distributions
  • Execute arbitrary scripts across environments to audit user accounts, check software package versions, dump configuration file contents, manage databases, and much more
